\\Sacrifice //

June’s broadcast features “Sacrifice”, it is inspired by Tabaski or Eid Al Adha the annual Muslim celebration that commemorates the prophet Ibrahim’s (Abraham) willingness to sacrifice his only son Issac to God. Individuals and families kill at least one ram and share the meat among friends, and neighbours.

This broadcast of Art Radio reflects on the story of the sacrifice and the act of sacrificing. Some people say God wanted to test Ibrahim. I see the sacrifice as an act of faith. The broadcast features the voice of MyMuna Sellah and Beverley Harris; a Muslim and a Christian.

Africa has taught me to see the deeper significance of religion in people’s lives. A religion is a system of codified beliefs and ritual practices. Religion explains how we were created and what created us. A friend explained to me that in Africa, a religion is like an identification card. It explains who you are and how you are expected to live.

The deeper significance of religion is how it encourages us to exercise faith. You need faith to survive in Africa. You must believe in something. You must believe in something greater than yourself. Given the oppressive history of Christianity and Islam especially in Africa where it has destroyed civilisations through “conversion”, it is important to understand it today. Over time Religion has become the shape or colour of one’s faith, giving it a permanence and enduring quality in Africa.
