Feb 9th I started making this playlist of some of my favorite music from Roy Ayers. He would pass away less than a month later. As I cry funky tears for the godfather of Jazz-funk I am grieving my real father too. Who passed away some weeks before Ayers. So far the playlist is a soulfully smooth 22 tracks and counting. Spanning some 90+ minutes across 8 albums. Hardly a scratch to the surface of Roy’s extensive discography. Listen to “Roy Ayers Dedication – Part I” by me, Baby Mango Friend on Artradio. Thanks to DJ Afifa and Sound Culture University for commissioning this.
Rhythm philosophically must be understood as Ntu or Universal Life force. To find it is to be intune with the universe -Marimba Ani
In the 1970s Ayers started a band called Roy Ayers Ubiquity. And ubiquitous was this band, that is said to have “synthesized” jazz, funk, rock, soul and salsa. The name “ubiquity” refers to the state of being everywhere at once, and in the context of this band seems to underscore the universality of their sound or “soul”.
